Finding God in the land of forgetfulness
Half-day workshop with Gaynor Hammond on Spiritual and Pastoral Care of People with Dementia.

Cost: £10pp if you book by 30 April- £12pp if you book by 21 June – £15pp on the door. Complimentary places available to participants in the early stages of dementia and to anyone caring for someone with dementia.
Session outlines:
Session 1 – Finding God in the land of forgetfulness.
To have a basic understanding of dementia and the effects the illness has on a person. To explore how to respond to the spiritual needs of people with dementia and their carers.
Session 2. – Drawing from the Wells of Life
To Begin to develop an understanding of the effects of dementia and consider ways to relate to the person in each stage of the disease.
Looking at creative ways of visiting and communicating on a more meaningful level.
Session 3. – Worship – planned services and sacred moments
To nurture the faith of people with dementia by looking at creative ways of preparing meaningful worship that the person with dementia can engage with, and making the most of those unplanned spiritual moments.
Session 4. – A way in the desert, streams in the wasteland
To explore ways of making our churches more dementia friendly. To find ways to minister to people with dementia and their carers so they know with everything in their being that they are ‘held by God.’
About Gaynor
Gaynor is a Baptist Minister. Her background is in nursing and for seven years she was in post as the Dementia Project Worker for ‘Faith in Elderly People’ Leeds.’ working with churches and health care organisations looking at the spiritual needs of people with dementia and how those needs could be met.
She has worked closely with Christian Council on Ageing, Methodist Homes for the Aged and other organisations. She has produced booklets on the subject of Spirituality and Dementia, a Training manual for Care Homes, a Booklet titled ‘Help! We have dementia.’ Written for friends and family who take on a caring role with their loved ones who have dementia. She has also worked collaboratively with the Baptist Union of Great Britain to produce ‘Safe to Belong’ , a learning pack on care of vulnerable adults in our churches
For the past fifteen years she has been in post as Regional Tutor for Northern Baptist College and Associate Pastor of South Parade Baptist Church in Leeds.
She has recently retired and has been spending more time looking at ways in which our churches can become more dementia friendly and has recently produced a book on the subject, called ‘Growing dementia friendly churches.’
